The term casual game is used to refer to a category of electronic or computer
games targeted at a mass audience typically with very simple rules or play
techniques, a very low degree of strategy, making them easy to learn and play as
a pastime. They require no long term time commitment or special skills to play,
and there are comparatively low production and distribution costs for the producer.
Casual games typically are played on a personal computer online in web browsers,
although they now are starting to become popular on game consoles, too. Casual
gaming demographics also vary greatly from those of traditional computer games,
as the typical casual gamer is older and more predominantly female.
Aida Hadziomerovic recently completed her MA in Psychology at the hotlab
at Carleton University, working with Dr. Robert Biddle. She is interested in
exploring the psychological facets of learning and how we acquire knowledge
through non traditional methods such as through playing video games.
Video games have the capacity to motivate, captivate and engage the players in
such a way that traditional class or lectures cannot achieve. The challenge is to
understand the learning mechanisms in game play and to harness these to make
learning more engaging and fun. Aida earlier completed her Honours Degree in
Psychology in 1995, and received a Post Graduate Diploma in Applied
Information Technology in 2000. She has worked in organisations in both
Canada and Europe applying her knowledge of Psychology and Technology.
There are at least two kinds of games. One would be called finite, the other
infinite. A finite game is played for the purpose of winning, and an infinite game is
played for the purpose of continuing to play. The rules of a finite game may not
change the rules of an infinite game must. The finite game player aims to win
eternal life the infinite player aims for eternal birth.
There must be few parents or teachers that do not worry that the lure of a video
game on a computer or console is hard to resist by children that really should be
doing their homework.
While many parents think that online games have corrupted their child’s
imaginations, studies are now showing that the free online entertainment actually
helps with IQ development. Although there are many online games that encourage
violence, other games help children and adults improve their memory and increase
their intelligence.
